Advanced Laboratory for Contaminant and Hydro-Environmental Management using Innovative Sustainable Technologies (ALCHEMIST)

Hello!
I am Dr. Appala Raju Badireddy, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Material Science Program at the University of Vermont (UVM), where I also serve as Director of the Advanced Laboratory for Contaminant and Hydro-Environmental Management using Innovative Sustainable Technologies (ALCHEMIST). In addition, I am the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Secure Surgical Solutions, LLC, a startup focused on advancing surgical safety through on-site production of medical-grade fluids. I am also the founding member of the Vermont Initiative for Biological and Environmental Surveillance (VIBES).

My research group focuses on four broad, interdisciplinary areas:

1. Sustainable Treatment and Resource Recovery
Development of innovative approaches for treating and reclaiming resources from surface water, groundwater, wastewater, landfill leachate, and water reuse systems, with an emphasis on advanced membrane processes.

2. Environmental Chemodynamics

Investigation of contaminant fate and transport- including emerging contaminants such as per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), heavy metals, microplastics, pesticides, persistent organic pollutants, and pharmaceutical compounds- across environmental compartments (water, soil, and air)

3. Ecological and Human Health
Study of biofilm dynamics in water recovery systems and toxicity of emerging contaminants such as PFAS and heavy metals, with implications for ecological and human health.

4. Environmental Nanotechnology
Design and application of nano-enabled microsensors for intelligent environmental monitoring, nanoremediation using advanced redox processes, reactive nano-composites, and assessment of metamaterials on environmental and human health.
